PRO PATRIA is a short film about two soldiers in the South African Defence Force in the early 1980s. Whilst doing compulsory military service they are stranded in enemy territory in Angola. They must fight for their lives as well as find their way back to their own troops. Adding to the tension, the two men are opposed in their political views, and see their duty as soldiers very differently.
Years later, one of these soldiers, Private Miller is suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and is haunted by what he experienced during his service. He is unable to remember exactly what happened, so he tries writing his story out to reconstruct the memory of these events.
PRO PATRIA is a UCT Production, written and directed by Matt Raubenheimer as an Honours-level video project. Cinematography by John DeVries. Starring James MacGregor as Private Miller and Mathew Lewis as Private Vorster.
